The Prince’s Trust Cheryl’s Trust Centre opening date is set

A date has been set for the opening of The Prince’s Trust and Cheryl’s Trust centre: it will be 20th February 2018, with Cheryl in attendance.

The new centre is located on Blandford Square, Newcastle. Staff will move in this month, but the official launch will be next February. The centre will build on The Prince’s Trust’s existing presence in the area and significantly increase support for unemployed young people across the North East, connecting them with even more training opportunities and jobs.

Cheryl said: “It seems like a lifetime since I started talking about opening a centre in Newcastle with The Prince’s Trust. I cannot believe the dream is finally real. Getting to this stage hasn’t been easy but we did it. I want to thank every single person and company that has helped me reach this milestone. Without all the support and help along the way I would never have been able to get here. My heart if so full of pride, love and hope. ”

Nick Stace, CEO of The Prince’s Trust said: “We are very grateful to Cheryl and proud of all that she has done to support The Prince’s Trust. The new centre will enable us to support over 5000 young people in the next three years and grow delivery of all our programmes. It’s a huge achievement and we look forward to celebrating, when we officially open the centre in February.”

On the 11th September 2017 Cheryl attended the BGC Charity Day in Canary Wharf in aid of Cheryl’s Trust. BGC Charity Day has been running every year on September 11th, in conjunction with the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, to remember their 658 friends and colleagues and the 61 Eurobrokers employee’s who were tragically killed in New York on 11/9/01. They honour them by distributing 100% of their global revenues to the Relief Fund and many other charities around the world. Thank you to BGC for their generous donation to Cheryl’s Trust in our support of The Princes Trust.

The Prince’s Trust and Cheryl’s Trust are proud to announce the forthcoming opening of a new centre for disadvantaged young people in the North East.

The new centre, which will be open later this year, is located on Blandford Square, Newcastle. It will build on The Prince’s Trust’s existing presence in the area and significantly increase support for unemployed young people across the North East, connecting them with even more training opportunities and jobs.

Cheryl said: “I’m so happy and excited that the Newcastle centre is finally coming to life. I am incredibly proud to call Newcastle my hometown and it’s important to me to be able to do my bit to help the young people in the area. No young person should be held back by their circumstances, this new centre will transform thousands of young lives by teaching skills, developing confidence and moving young people into education, work or training.  A huge thanks to everyone that has supported my Trust in making this possible.”

Dame Martina Milburn DCVO CBE, group chief executive at The Prince’s Trust said: “The North East of England has one of the highest rates of youth unemployment in the UK. It is crucial for us to intensify our work in this area, where there is a deep rooted pattern of long term unemployment. We are very grateful to Cheryl for her longstanding and active commitment to The Prince’s Trust. The opening of the new centre is certainly an achievement to be celebrated. The centre will enable us to support over 5000 young people in the next three years and grow delivery of all our programmes.”

Cheryl has had a long standing relationship with The Prince’s Trust.  In 2015 Cheryl’s Trust launched a fundraising campaign to help The Prince’s Trust open the new centre. To achieve this goal, Cheryl’s Trust worked in particular with ICAP, Greggs, SAS/Storm Flower and The Quintessentially Foundation.

This year, The Prince’s Trust will support, across the UK, 60,000 disadvantaged young people to develop the confidence and skills they need to succeed in life. Three in four young people supported by The Prince’s Trust move into work, education or training.

Cheryl surprises Prince’s Trust Samsung Achiever of the Year Winner in Newcastle!

The North East Celebrate Success Awards took place on 26th November and it was an afternoon of celebration, recognising the fantastic achievements of young people across the region who have been supported by The Prince’s Trust. Of course, as soon as we heard it was being held in Newcastle – which will be the location of the brand new Prince’s Trust centre Cheryl’s Trust is funding – Cheryl immediately wanted to attend and surprise the winners! So, together with The Prince’s Trust, that’s exactly what we did. We managed to keep everything top secret until the very last minute when Cheryl came out onstage to present Adrian Maddocks, the Samsung Young Achiever of the Year, with his award.

Adrian endured years of bullying at school and also suffered from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). He was moved to a special needs school where he was able to progress and make friends, however when he moved on to college to study retail, he couldn’t keep up, and was asked to leave.  Adrian says: “I was so upset. I felt like I wasn’t good enough.” Adrian could job search online but wasn’t capable of applying. Adrian felt trapped and two years of unemployment followed. However, Adrian refused to give up. He volunteered two evenings a week in a hospital and was referred by his employment support advisor to Get into Retail.

Get into Retail is a Prince’s Trust programme delivered in partnership with Tesco and gives unemployed young people the skills and experience they need to find work in the sector. Adrian says: “When I got told I’d got a place on the course it was amazing. Finally I was getting a shot at finding work.” Adrian’s commitment was exceptional. Despite working nights at the hospital and mornings doing a paper round, he always arrived on time and eager to learn.

The programme’s group training boosted his confidence and his placement gave him a real sense of achievement. Tesco bosses rated Adrian highly and immediately offered him work when the programme ended.  Adrian loves working at Tesco and has set his sights on working his way up into a managerial role. He has moved into independent living and is currently having driving lessons.

After meeting Cheryl, Adrian said: “I am speechless! To win this award and to meet Cheryl has been absolutely amazing!”

It was a wonderful moment – with Cheryl summing it up perfectly by saying that Adrian and all the nominees that night were a ‘true inspiration’. Congratulations to Adrian and all the other Prince’s Trust winners!
